That is assuming of course you have good targets you need mercenaries for that have good payback, but the point stands. Why spend money on something that will pay back in a hundred years when you could spend that money conquering land instead that will pay it back in fifty? Let other people do the investments and you can swoop in and take their hard work. That is, what else could you spend your money on compared to these buildings? A common mantra that experienced players touted was mercenaries. Why is this important? Opportunity costs. In the case of the castle towns it's even worse since you have to spend five times as much gold for that 30 turn building and it's only giving you 1 gold.

Having a building pay you 1 gold for 100 turns gives more money than one that pays you 3 gold for 30 turns. Yet there's significantly less time remaining in the game for them to pay back that investment. This is an unfortunate tendency that many Paradox games have, where buildings get less return on investment the later in the game you are at. Especially if that fancy castle town six isn't going to return on your investment until after the game ends. As you can see, these are getting worse and worse. However 3 took 100 years, 4 150 years, 5 200 years, and 6 250 years. The castle town 2 would pay for itself in 60 years. Meaning it paid back for itself in 50 years. Building a castle town 1 gave +2 gold per year at a cost of 100 gold. However, the return on investment went down the later on the upgrade was. In CK2 you could invest your money into buildings and holdings to get more money later on. Always avoid anything costing more than 200 gold for 0.1 income. Late game in counties with mid-high development and boosts from other modifiers like great temples, 100 gold per 0.1 gold income can still give decent returns. Avoid all buildings that cost more than 125 gold per 0.1 gold they increase your income by. Great temple buildings are the best investment in the game and make it worth upgrading some of the buildings in the duchy they're in.Įarly game with low development, buildings that cost 62.5 gold per 0.1 gold they earn or less are good investments assuming you never replace them. Never upgrade castles for more gold, even later gold buildings.
